It’s 1952 miles from Washington, D.C. to Hailey, Idaho and that’s how far I flew to join my sister’s long time book group, “The Bookettes” for a conversation about Irish Luck Chinese Medicine. We dined on Irish and Chinese dishes. Dessert was homemade plum tart, with homegrown plums (the independent mountain women of Idaho do everything!)
The group also gave me great last-minute feedback before final publication. I am grateful for their hospitality and generosity of heart reading the almost-ready novel. I”ll be coming back around the mountain to visit again.
Pets Welcome in McLean, Virginia
Vibha Miller (pictured above with her dog, Luna,) graciously hosted her book group for a delicious Chinese dinner, culminating with homemade Tiramiso soaked in Bailey’s Irish Creme. We had a lively discussion: What motivated Finn’s hostility? Were 19th Century gay priests sexually suppressed? Is Rosie alive?
The group asked me why I love visiting book groups. The answer? In addition to the pleasure of enjoying Chinese and Irish cuisine, readers give me new insights into the characters I came to love or distain) while writing the book.
The group also shared personal or ancestral memories about the historical period, including a relative who recalled mistreatment of Chinese railroad workers in Wyoming or of terror invoked by a vindictive elementary classroom nun. It is quite an experience when readers jump into the world of Irish Luck, Chinese Medicine with me.
